Free Houston concert alert: Fishbone, Trombone Shorty, Robert Glasper
Most people like music, and even more like things that are free. Which makes for a good few weeks as Houston offers up numerous free outdoor shows before falling under a blanket of summer heat.
The Party on the Plaza series launched last Thursday at the Plaza at Avenida Houston across from Discovery Green. Upcoming Party on the Plaza performers: New Orleans funk band Dumpstaphunk on April 12; the enduring funk soul ensemble Fishbone on April 26; old-school vinyl DJs the Waxaholics on April 26. The series closes May 10 with the dynamic New Orleans player Trombone Shorty.
More information on Party on the Plaza can be found at avenidahouston.com.
The Houston Blues Society and Direct Energy Concerts have lined up a stout blues lineup for April 21, that includes some of the city’s best blues talent: Trudy Lynn and the Steve Krase Band; Milton Hopkins; and Carolyn Wonderland.
And Grammy-winning pianist/composer Robert Glasper will perform at the Bayou City Music Series, which begins April 7 at Emancipation Park, 3018 Emancipation Avenue.
That series will then move to Buffalo Bayou Park Waterworks, 105 Sabine, on May 19, with the HSPVA Jazz band, R&B great Grady Gaines, Trudy Lynn and the ThunderSoul Orchestra.
Also outdoors, also free are the offerings at Miller Outdoor Theatre, now in its 95th season. “Monkey & Francine in the City of Tigers” — a Bollywood-style opera — makes its world premiere at Miller May 2, with additional morning shows May 3-4.
Troker — a Mexican band that mixes folk, jazz, funk and hip-hop — will perform May 4. Also coming at Miller: Mariachi Los Camperos on May 5; the “Dancin’ in the Street” Motown revue on May 24-27. Miller’s full lineup is at milleroutdoortheatre.com.
Discovery Green’s previously announced lineup includes rapper Slim Thug on May 17; blues singer and pianist Marcia Ball on May 24; songwriter and artist Terry Allen on May 31 and more. Find details at discoverygreen.com.
