Hawks’ Ed Gray Arrested for DUI
ATLANTA (AP) _ Ed Gray, a backup guard for the Atlanta Hawks, has been charged with drug possession and driving under the influence, the team said today.
General manager Pete Babcock said Gray was stopped by a state trooper in Atlanta on Thursday night for minor traffic violations, and the trooper arrested him after the officer said he found marijuana and an open container of alcohol in the car.
In addition to drug possession and DUI, Babcock said Gray was charged with driving with an open container and driving on a suspended and revoked license. The state patrol couldn’t immediately confirm the charges.
Babcock said the Hawks can’t take any action against Gray unless there is a conviction.
``We take these issues extremely seriously,″ he said. ``We met with our team this morning and told them we’ll support anybody who is in our family 100 percent with legal help, counseling, whatever’s necessary.
``But, if in fact any of our guys are found guilty of a misdemeanor or felony, we would take the harshest measure allowed by collective bargaining.″
He did not know what that would be.
Gray played at the University of California and was a first-round draft pick of the Hawks in 1997. He spent part of his rookie season on injured reserve after breaking his foot.
