Fern was very involved in the Utica Victory 4-H Club, Utica Homemaker Group, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, as well as St. Francis Unit. She had won baking contests at the Winona County Fair, and was especially proud of her Winona County Fair Fern Kieffer Day in 1998. She had also volunteered at the fair as a judge assistant in the open class and as making quilts with her church ladies for missions.
