Epic! Clemson shocks Alabama 35-31 for second national title

January 10, 2017 GMT

TAMPA, Fla. — The littlest guy on the field made the biggest play in Clemson football history.

Hunter Renfrow’s 1-yard touchdown catch from Deshaun Watson with one second remaining lifted No. 2 Clemson to a thrilling 35-31 victory over No. 1 Alabama in the 2016 College Football Playoff national championship on Monday night in front of a Raymond James Stadium-record attendance of 74,512.

The 5-11, 180-pound Renfrow caught two touchdowns, just as he did in last year’s title game - though Clemson lost that one to Alabama, 45-40. This time, the Tigers won it all, behind four total touchdowns by Watson.

The Tigers clinched their second national championship, paired with the 1981 title.
