Orioles cannot figure out Gleyber Torres

Matthew Paras The Washington TimesMay 23, 2019

If you have an answer on how to stop Gleyber Torres, the Baltimore Orioles would desperately like to know.

The New York Yankees shortstop has 12 home runs this season 10 of which have come against the Orioles. Further, those 10 dingers have come in 11 games. He hit two home runs against Baltimore in the Yankees’ 7-5 victory on Wednesday.

Against the Orioles this year, Torres is hitting.465 with an 1.763 OPS.

“I don’t really know what to say,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters. “There’s definitely a pitching plan. It definitely isn’t to throw the ball in the middle of the plate. And we continue to do it.”

The Orioles have allowed 105 home runs in 49 games this season which means Torres accounts for 9.5% of them.

UPDATE: 🚨 Gleyber Torres homered again and the Orioles announcers are speechless. 😂😂 #Orioles #Yankees #PinstripePride #MLB pic.twitter.com/tgIlZ79D0w Sports Its What We Do (@SportsWhatWeDo) May 23, 2019

Another fun fact: With four multi-home run games against Baltimore, Torres became the first player in 64 years to have four multi-homer games against the the same team. He is just the fourth player in MLB history to reach that feat.

On the bright side, the Orioles only have to play the Yankees ... eight more times this season.
