Replay results in overturned World Series call

October 30, 2014

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) — The first call to be overturned in the World Series under Major League Baseball’s expanded replay rules occurred during a double play in the third inning of Game 7.

The Royals and Giants were tied at 2 and Kansas City had a runner on first base with nobody out. Eric Hosmer hit a grounder and second baseman Joe Panik made a diving stop, flipping the ball with his glove to shortstop Brandon Crawford.

Crawford’s throw to first base arrived just as Hosmer crossed the bag, and first base umpire Eric Cooper called Hosmer safe. The call was overturned after a review of 2 minutes, 57 seconds.
