Athlete Of The Week: Holy Redeemer’s Margaret Walting

March 12, 2018 GMT

Margaret Walting has already had one successful trip to the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University.

It appears she might be on her way to another.

The Holy Redeemer sophomore broke a pool and meet record in the 100 breaststroke to win gold at the District 2 Class 2A championships on Monday. She’ll compete at Bucknell in that event, as well as the 50 free (in which she won district bronze) and two relays.

For her accomplishment, Walting was named The Citizens’ Voice Athlete of the Week presented by Surgical Specialists of Wyoming Valley.

Q: What was the initial feeling like when you heard you broke the two records?

A: It was exciting. At first, going in, I didn’t know I was close enough to break it. After I did it and my coaches told me, I was really, really excited.

Q: How do you get prepared right before a big race like that?

A: I definitely like to keep my mind off (the race) as long as I can and cheer on my teammates, and then I listen to music that will get me in the right mindset.

Q: Does your performance at districts tell you anything about how you may fare at states?

A: Not really. They’re two very different things. The atmosphere is so different at states, and there’s more pressure at districts. It’s because of the pressure to get to states, and you know the other kids so well and what they can do so well.

Q: You’ll be in four events at states. Which one are you most looking forward to?

A: Probably the (100) breaststroke. This year, for sure, I’ve learned to love that event more than in the past.

Q: This being your second state meet, will it feel any different or be less stressful?

A: It’s going to be just as nerve-wracking, but knowing everything better — the pool and the meet better — it’s going to put me in a good position.
