Starkey: ‘It just comes down to execution’

October 13, 2017 GMT

MOHAVE VALLEY — The Dust Devils’ two-game win streak went up in smoke after falling 41-8 to the Odyssey Prep Minotaurs at River Valley High School on Oct. 5.

The 2-5 overall, 1-1 in the Arizona Interscholastic Association 3A West Region River Valley squad will be facing a much tougher test at 7 tonight at Northwest Christian High School against the 5-2 overall, 2-0 in the 3A West Region Crusaders.

The Dust Devils had their chances against the Minotaurs, but sloppy play kept them from converting on a handful of opportunities.

“The kids were prepared, but it just comes down to execution,” River Valley first-year head football coach Chris Starkey said. “We didn’t have the best week of practice. There was a little bit of overconfidence, there was a little bit of lackadaisical attitudes and all those things combining formulated into that result tonight.”

Starkey said his Dust Devils knew that the Minotaurs were going to be a run-first team.

“We planned for that,” Starkey added. “We just didn’t get the job done. ... No excuses.”
