Girl Scouts, garden club collecting old sneakers for recycling
Don’t pitch those used tennis shoes just yet.
The Fox Chapel Garden Club and members of local Girl Scout troops are collecting used sneakers to help people in need.
Gently used shoes will be donated to the Free Store in Braddock and to St. Vincent de Paul locations across the region.
Worn-out shoes will be shipped to Nike’s “Reuse-A-Shoe” program where they are ground into bits and reused as playground mats, running tracks and basketball courts.
All brands of athletic shoes are accepted, but boots and cleats are not wanted.
Founded in 1931, the garden club’s mission is to promote environmental stewardship. Members have collected thousands of pairs of athletic shoes over the years and in 2009, the club won a National Garden Club Federation Award for the work.
Collection bins have been placed at several municipal buildings and the Cooper-Siegel Community Library. For locations, contact Rebecca Ringham Myerburg at email@example.com.
