Geraldine M Van Bruggen, 91, of Seminole, formerly Okoboji, Iowa and Vermillion, S.D., passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017 at Suncoast Hospice, Pinellas Park, Fla.

A private family service will be held in Florida. A memorial service and interment will be held in Ireton, Iowa in the spring of 2018. Condolences may be sent to: Janet Hazen, 66201 Stratford Rd., Pinellas Park, FL 33782

Geraldine was born June 21, 1926 in Ireton to Henry & Mae Houlton Poll. She graduated from Ireton High School in 1944. After graduation, she attended Westmar College and taught fifth grade in Winnebago, Neb. Geraldine enrolled in Lutheran School of Nursing in Sioux City in 1945 as a member of the Cadet Nursing Corp.

After graduation in 1948, Geraldine married Ted Van Bruggen on Sept. 30, 1948. She worked in hospitals in Le Mars, Iowa, Sioux Center, Iowa, Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa and Vermillion. In 1968, Geraldine became the school nurse for the Vermillion School System, retiring in 1988.

Mrs. Van Bruggen is survived by her husband of 69 years, Ted; daughter, Janet Hazen; son, Tom (Linda) Van Bruggen; grandchildren, Matt (Shana) Van Bruggen, Andrew (Melissa) Van Bruggen, Erin (Joe) Exter, Jay (Kim) Beringer, Justin (Beth) Hazen, Todd (Anne) Hazen; nine great grandchildren with one on the way; sisters, Helen VerHoeven of Ireton, Iowa and Mary (Mike) Magan of Ada, Mich.; Aunt, Marjorie Johnson of Ireton; sister in law, Ann Van Bruggen of Hawarden, Iowa and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, brother and sisters in law.
