Southern Tier Brewing Co. sets opening date

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Southern Tier Brewing Co. is scheduled to open its doors Tuesday, Sept. 4, in downtown Cleveland.

And while any brewery opening in Northeast Ohio is news, this one has a unique spin: It’s a New York-based brewery making beer in Cleveland.

The two-story location has a bar on both floors, couches, a seven-barrel brewhouse, full kitchen and “speakeasy” feel in the basement, said Neil Mentzer, an area sales manager with the brewery.

Southern Tier’s Cleveland brewery-brewpub is in the former 811 Kitchen Bar Lounge. In a smart approach to its surroundings, the brewery’s website says the brewpub might revert to limited menus during Cleveland Indians and Cavs games for efficient service.

Artisanal Brewing Ventures owns Southern Tier of Lakewood, N.Y. and Victory Brewing Co. of Downington, Pa. The Cleveland location will have 30 taps, with a variety of beers from both breweries.

Draft only will be served, though bottles and cans will be sold to-go. A crowler machine is available for those who want to have 32-ounce cans filled, and flights of beer also will be served.

A trio of Pumking variations is on tap including Cold Pressed Coffee, introduced last year; a 13.7 percent alcohol Rum Barrel-Aged version that Mentzer calls “a little more high-octane,” and draft-only Chai Tea infused, a new one.

Southern Tier also operates a distillery, so expect spirits as well.

About Southern Tier

It’s at 811 Prospect Ave. in downtown Cleveland, across from the Winking Lizard. Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday; 11 a.m.-midnight Friday-Saturday. Area garages are the best bet for parking, along with some street spots.
