Official: Milan Runway Crash Kills 100
ROME (AP) _ An SAS airliner swerved off the runway at Milan’s Linate airport to avoid a smaller plane that crossed its path and crashed into a small building Monday, killing more than 100 people in a fire, a fire department official said.
More than 24 bodies had been pulled from the wreckage as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. Access to the fuselage was made difficult because the aircraft hit a cement beam as it plowed into the baggage storage building, county fire officials said.
An official at the Linate fire department, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed more than 100 people had died. The ANSA news agency reported the same death toll.
