LAS VEGAS – The Needles High School Lady ’Stangs are headed to the NIAA 2A State Championship round as the number two team from the south.

The Lady ’Stangs started their playoff run with a 13-2 win over the Laughlin High School Lady Cougars on May 9.

Alex Chandler, Lady ’Stangs softball head coach, reported that Paige Murch was in the circle for the team and she did very well.

Chandler stated that the Lady ’Stangs were facing two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and that’s when the girls’ bats came alive as they got seven runs before the third out came.

“In the game, Paige Murch had a bases-clearing triple and a two-run home run,” said Chandler. “Even though we started slow we felt the girls were more focused and that would carry into the rest of the weekend.”

Game two for the Lady ’Stangs was against the Lincoln County Lady Lynx. Lincoln was the only team in league play that had given Needles trouble in the regular season, but the Lady ’Stangs had come out on top both times: 16-8 and 11-10 in a doubleheader in Needles on April 12.

This time around the Lady Lynx got the better of the Lady ’Stangs, winning 5-1 on May 10.

With one loss on their playoff record, the Lady ’Stangs had to beat their next opponent, The Meadows Lady Mustangs, to stay alive in the playoffs.

And that is exactly what they did as the Lady ’Stangs won the high scoring affair against the Lady Mustangs 22-17.

The win sent the Lady ’Stangs to the NIAA 2A South League championship game against the Lady Lynx on May 11.

Needles’ girls won the contest 11-5. Since the Lady Lynx and the Lady ’Stangs had one win each against each other they needed to play a game seven to determine who would get the number one rank out of the south league.

The Lady ’Stangs came up short against the Lady Lynx in Game 7, losing 13-6.

With the Lady ’Stangs as the number two team from the south, they will play Silver Stage High School, the number one team from the north league.

The game starts at 2 p.m. on May 16 at The Meadows School.

The Meadows School is at 8601 Scholar Ln., southeast of the intersection of West Lake Mead Boulevard and North Rampart Boulevard in the Summerlin area of Las Vegas.
