Construction to Close Part of Father Morissette Boulevard in Lowell
LOWELL -- A section of the westbound lanes of Father Morissette Boulevard will be closed to traffic during the evening hours Thursday and Friday for road work, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
The work will occur each night between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. allowing crews and contractors to carry out demolition operations on the bridge that carries Pawtucket Street over the Northern Canal, a MassDOT press release states.
All westbound traffic on Father Morissette Boulevard will be detoured at the intersection of Aiken Street, directed left onto Aiken Street, and then right onto Merrimack Street westbound, where it will rejoin Pawtucket Street/Father Morissette Boulevard at the University Avenue Bridge.
The bridge demolition operations involve removing large steel girders from the existing bridge to allow for bridge reconstruction, the release states. The work is part of a $12.8 million project to replace five canal bridges in Lowell.
Signs, traffic control devices and messaging will be used to guide drivers. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes to minimize delays.
The work is weather dependent and could be rescheduled without notice, the release states.
