Davenport, Sturm lead UTSA past Rice

October 22, 2017

After the debacle in Denton, UTSA spent the week focused on finishing. Apparently, the message came through. Loud and clear.

Defensive end Marcus Davenport returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown and the Roadrunners pulled away in the second half to beat Rice 20-7 on homecoming Saturday night in front of 25,270 at the Alamodome.

Dalton Sturm used his arm and legs to help guide UTSA (4-2, 1-2) to its first Conference USA victory. The senior threw for 134 yards and a touchdown and ran for 79 yards as the Roadrunners posted their third straight win over the Owls (1-6, 1-2).

Running back Tyrell Clay rushed for 153 yards on just 11 carries.

But the night belonged to the defense. Davenport tied a career high with 11 tackles, including two sacks and 3½ tackles for loss. Cornerback Clayton Johnson had two interceptions as UTSA rebounded from a last-minute 29-26 loss at North Texas a week ago.
