PPA fundraiser at Aroma Park

September 14, 2018 GMT

Daily Journal staff report

The Potawatomi Paddlers Association will sponsor a fundraiser, featuring Tall Paul and the River Country Band, at Ryan’s Pier in Aroma Park Sept. 27.

A portion of all food sales at Ryan’s Pier from 7 to 10 p.m. will be donated to the organization in support of its activities.

The Potawatomi Paddlers Association future activities include organizing paddlesport outings with kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddling outings and other events on the Kankakee River, facilitating training in skills and safety for paddlers and developing put-in/take-out site and camping improvements along the river.

On the occasion of the National Park Service designation of the Kankakee River as a National Water Trail, several local paddlers and river enthusiasts joined together in 2017 to form the Potawatomi Paddlers Association.

The Kankakee River National Water Trail comprises the entire 133-mile length of the River in Indiana and Illinois. It is one of 22 such federally-recognized trails in the country

Floating to Wilmington

The Potawatomi Paddlers Association, an Illinois support group for the Kankakee River National Water Trail, is planning a kayak and canoe trip from Rivals Lookout Park to Wilmington on Saturday.

Rivals Lookout Park is on the north side of the river, at the end of Rivals Road, off Illinois Route 102 northwest of Ritchie.

It’s a free event, but bring your own boat.

Low water a mile up river from Wilmington might require participants to get out and walk, PPA member Bruce Cowhig has noted.

The event will end above the Wilmington dam. Participants also can meet afterward at Hayden’s Crossing restaurant, 107 Water St. in downtown Wilmington, for a bite and recap of the river trip.

Stateline paddling

Friends of the Sands in Indiana will sponsor a canoe and kayak event on the Kankakee River National Water Trail beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the boat launch north of State Line Bridge.

The float downstream is expected to take about three hours, meandering through the Momemce wetlands areas downstream from the state line.

The launch site is off State Line Road at the west end of Indiana’s LaSalle Fish and Wildlife Area, accessible from U.S. Route 41 at Schneider, Ind., via West 241st St. road; or east from the northeast side of Momence on Kankakee County Road 4000N or other local blacktops to State Line Road.

Bring a lunch, water and sunscreen.
