River Hawks Upend UMass
AMHERST -- Christoffer Hernberg was the story Friday night as the UMass Lowell hockey team knocked off UMass Amherst, the second-ranked team in the country, 2-1 at the Mullins Center.
Hernberg, a senior goalie from Finland, stopped 33 of the 34 shots fired on him by the Minutemen, who fell to 14-3-0 with the defeat and suffered their first loss in eight Hockey East contests.
UMass Lowell (5-4-1 Hockey East, 9-8-1 overall) got a first-period unassisted goal from freshman Reid Stefanson on a breakaway, then senior Connor Wilson netted the eventual game-winner in the second.
Chris Schutz and Nick Master assisted on the goal.
UMass Amherst closed the gap later in the second period on a goal by Niko Hillenbrand, but Hernberg barred the door after that. Lowell was outshot in the game, 34-21, including 12-4 in the final period.
UMass was ranked No. 2 in the latest USCHO Division 1 poll, trailing only St. Cloud State.
The River Hawks play next Friday and Saturday at Colgate in a non-conference series.
