No. 19 Irish Pounce on Rider 101-51

December 29, 2006

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ Rob Kurz scored 23 points and Kyle McAlarney had 21 points on seven 3-pointers to lead Notre Dame to a 101-51 win over Rider on Thursday night. Notre Dame (11-1) won its 10th straight game in its best run since winning 11 in a row during the 1986-87 season. The Irish are also off to their best start since opening up 12-1 in 2002-03.

The game was the fourth consecutive on the road for Rider (7-5), which dropped its second game to a Big East team in the last eight days. Villanova beat the Broncs 108-61 on Dec. 20.

McAlarney’s 3-point outburst for the Irish gave him a career high in what was Mike Brey’s 200th game as Notre Dame’s coach

Teammate Luke Harangody tied his career high with 18 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double and fourth of the season.

Notre Dame outscored Rider 23-5 over a 5:11 stretch of the first half that saw the Irish lead grow to 24 points. McAlarney hit three 3-pointers and Harangody scored eight points down low during the run.

Rider scored 11 straight early in the second half to close within 24 points, but Harangody answered with a basket down low, a nice inside pass to teammate Zach Hillesland for a layup and tip-in basket all in less than two minutes.
