Beaver Dam Family Center Ice Arena seeks to qualify to win new lighting system

January 30, 2018 GMT

The Beaver Dam Family Center Ice Arena is among 33 community skating rinks in the United States competing for a free light-emitting diode sports lighting system with the American Hockey League Light Like the Pros promotion.

“We’re in third place now,” Family Center rink manager Jim Szopinski said.

The list of competing rinks is currently being narrowed down from 33 to the top 10. Votes are collected online at LightLikeThePros.com and people may vote once per day.

The semifinals will end Feb. 2. From there, the top 10 teams will compete from Feb. 5 to March 2. The final four will then compete from March 5-18. The winner will be announced March 20.

Szopinski said the Family Center is on its second lighting system in the 34-year-old building.

“We got the last lights 10 years ago, when they were the newest and the greatest,” Szopinski said. “That time it was through a low-interest loan.”

The Ephesus LED sports lighting system is valued at $50,000. Energy-efficient LED lights use less energy and emit less heat, saving additional time and energy that would be used to maintain the ice.

“We are always looking to save money,” Szopinski said. “Right now, we are working at Lambeau Field and selling items at the concession stand in order to do capital improvements.”

The Family Center is one of the Wisconsin rinks representing the Milwaukee Admirals. Szopinski said that it appears that Beaver Dam might be able to gain more support through the Admirals after this round in order to improve its standings since the rink is in a good place in the contest.
