TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — A Cherokee County man has pleaded guilty in the fatal shooting of an 88-year-old rancher.

The Muskogee Phoenix (http://bit.ly/2cX2lKc ) reports that 25-year-old Paul Dean Newberry pleaded guilty Thursday in the death of Charley Kirk. He had been charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a weapon, first-degree burglary, attempted first-degree arson, larceny of an automobile and third-degree arson.

Newberry was sentenced by a judge to life in prison without parole. Prosecutors decided to not pursue the death penalty in exchange for the guilty plea.

Authorities say Newberry shot and killed Kirk on July 27, 2015 during what prosecutors described as a home invasion gone awry. Another man has been charged in the case.
