Police investigate Springfield shooting
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Springfield police are investigating a fatal shooting for the third consecutive weekend.
Police say 33-year-old Hakeem Powell was shot in what they think was a drug-related dispute at about 2:15 p.m. Saturday in the city’s Old Hill neighborhood. Powell was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Capt. Trent Duda says there had been no arrests as of Monday morning.
One man was shot the previous weekend, and two people were fatally shot in unrelated incidents the weekend before that. Those shootings, too, remain unsolved.
Mayor Dominic Sarno has responded by stepping up police presence in crime-ridden areas of the city.
There have been 16 homicides in Springfield this year.
