Florence Little Theatre cancels first three nights of production

September 13, 2018 GMT

FLORENCE, S.C. — Because of uncertainty surrounding Hurricane Florence, the Florence Little Theatre announced that it would be canceling the first three showings of its season-opening production, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”

The show, which originally was scheduled to open Friday night, will be canceled Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a result of the storm.

Jessica Larrimore, the executive director of Florence Little Theatre, said the decision was made in the best interest of all those involved.

“We have staff, volunteers and patrons that come from many miles away, and we didn’t want to put anyone in danger,” Larrimore said.

As of Thursday morning, Larrimore said the show will run Tuesday, Sept. 18, through Sunday, Sept. 23. The theater is contacting anyone who had tickets for the canceled shows and allowing them to exchange their tickets for a date next week.

The box office will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, Larrimore said, the theater will determine box office hours for next week.

“We are working as quickly as we can,” she said. “Thank you for your patience as we exchange tickets from the weekend’s performances.”

Frankie Sullivan, the director of the show, said that safety is most important during an event like Hurricane Florence.

“We canceled the show to make sure everyone is safe first and foremost,” Sullivan said. “We wanted to open Friday night, but our No. 1 priority is that our cast, orchestra, volunteers, staff and all those involved are safe. Next week, when we do open, everyone is ready, thrilled and they’re excited for the city of Florence to see what we’ve been putting together over the past few months.”

According to FLT’s website, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” is a satire of big business and follows the rise of J. Pierrepont Finch, who uses a little handbook called “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” to climb the corporate ladder from lowly window washer to high-powered executive, tackling such familiar but potent dangers as the aggressively compliant “company man,” the office party, backstabbing co-workers, caffeine addiction and, of course, true love.
