Former DeKalb interim City Manager Molly Talkington lands job in East Dundee

February 6, 2019

EAST DUNDEE – Former interim DeKalb City Manager Molly Talkington seems to have quickly landed on her feet, snagging a job as interim finance director in the village of East Dundee.

The gig, arranged through GovTemps USA, will pay Talkington about $60 per hour in her temporary role with the village, while she continues to collect nearly $70,000 from a legal settlement with the city of DeKalb, a sum established after she was placed on administrative leave as finance director.

“Molly has an enormous amount of municipal finance experience.” Village Administrator Jennifer Johnsen said in a news release.

The village’s finance director position was vacated in January when Zaida Torres resigned, the release says.

“[Talkington’s] expertise and experience will be well-appreciated as East Dundee moves through this transition period,” Johnsen said in the release.

The city of DeKalb will continue to pay Talkington her normal biweekly salary, including a car allowance, at the rate she was paid as finance director – $4,995 every two weeks, as of Jan. 6. Talkington will be paid that rate for six months until July 7, at which time her employment with the city will be terminated.

Talkington has also been allowed to stay on the city’s benefits plan, and will get about $7,000 because of unused vacation time.

She filed a sexual harassment and gender discrimination lawsuit in November claiming Mayor Jerry Smith and City Attorney Dean Frieders treated her unfairly because she wouldn’t say whether she was dating then-First Ward Alderman David Jacobson.

Talkington came under fire and was put on leave in November after DeKalb officials discovered the city was not fully covering its obligations to pay for retiree and employee health benefits.

In the days leading up to Talkington being placed on leave, she was announced as one of four finalists for the city administrator job in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, and she never returned messages left by the Daily Chronicle inquiring about that job – which she apparently didn’t get.

Talkington was hired as DeKalb’s finance director in September 2017, and was named interim city manager in June 2018 after Anne Marie Gaura resigned in March 2018 after serving in the administrative leader role since 2014. Upon Gaura’s resignation, Patty Hoppenstedt was promoted from assistant city manager to interim city manager until she also resigned in June to move out of state with her family, at which point Talkington took the reins.

Her contract with East Dundee is for three months.
