Early childhood professionals to gather
MICHIGAN CITY — Family child care providers and students enrolled in early childhood development and elementary education will gather this weekend for an “often neglected” area of professional development.
La Porte County Head Start is hosting “Celebrating The Profession,” a free mini-conference for early childhood professionals from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
The event at Niemann Elementary School, 811 Royal Road, is open to the public, but especially geared toward family child care providers and college students pursuing degrees in early childhood development and elementary education.
“We are very excited to bring professional development to La Porte County,” said Theresa Argueta, director of learning programs at Imagination Station Child Development Center. She’s assisting in the event, which she says focuses on “a region that is often neglected as far as providing meaningful and relevant early childhood professional development opportunities.”
Jessie Olson of California-based Lakeshore Learning will be the instructor.
Attendees can expect “training on music and how to use it in all academic and development areas; and how to create learning opportunities outdoors,” Argueta said.
The first session at 9 a.m. is titled “Music and You! Moving and Grooving throughout the Day.” “Bringing the Learning Environment Outside” follows at 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.
The event, offered for the first time, is free to attend, though Argueta said a session of this size, with a full expected enrollment, would normally cost about $70 per person. Lunch is also provided.
“We provide professional development to our teachers every year, so we wanted to use our resources wisely in services to the community – we wanted to share the resources which we serve,” said Argueta, explaining that it’s the same cost for the mini-conference if a few attend or if more take advantage of the training opportunity.
Space is limited and anyone interested in attending needs to register by calling Head Start of La Porte County at (219) 873-2146 or visiting inaeyc.org/dunes-region.
