Gamecocks’ Hilinski passes for 206 yards in spring game
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina freshman passer Ryan Hilinksi threw for 206 yards in the Gamecocks’ annual Garnet-and-Black game to finish spring practice Saturday.
South Carolina coach Will Muschamp has all its quarterbacks play on both the Black and Garnet teams. Hilinski is the younger brother of the late Tyler Hilinski, the Washington State quarterback who committed suicide last year. Ryan Hilinski completed 13 of 20 passes for 134 yards for the Black team and 11 of 16 throws for 72 yards for the Garnet squad.
Ryan Hilinski is bidding for the backup job behind senior starter Jake Bentley. Bentley played the first series of each half before heading to the sidelines. Bentley’s lone touchdown pass was to his former star receiver Deebo Samuel, the guest pass-catcher in South Carolina’s yearly spring tradition where a surprise receiver comes off the bench for a wide-open throw.
The practice was started during coach Steve Spurrier’s time at South Carolina. A year ago, Spurrier was the guest receiver who dropped the pass in the end zone.
Bentley finished with 96 yards passing on 9 of 14 completions. Reserve passer Jay Ulrich had a 62-yard TD catch and later threw a touchdown.
