White Man Convicted in Noose Crime
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ A white man was convicted of ethnic intimidation on the job Tuesday for slipping a noose around a black co-worker’s neck when he wasn’t looking and tightening it.
Joe Larose, 35, was convicted by a jury of three counts of ethnic intimidation, simple assault and possession of instrument of a crime.
The defense suggested that Larose was only joking when he slipped the noose around Dwayne Jackson’s neck Thursday at a downtown parking garage where they worked.
Co-workers testified that Larose had been joking earlier in the day about using the noose. He also had told other co-workers it was for them if they didn’t work, said co-worker Walter Felton.
Jackson testified that after Larose placed the noose around his neck, he yelled, ``Skin him,″ and laughed about it.
``It was just a horrifying experience,″ Jackson said. ``I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.″
Jackson, a truck driver, reported the incident to his employer and to Philadelphia police. Larose was later fired.
Larose did not comment after the verdict. He was released on bail until his Dec. 22 sentencing. He faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison.
Jackson has also filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Larose.
