Area enjoys banner day at UIL state tennis tourney
Area athletes collected three gold medals and four silvers Friday at the UIL state tennis championships at Texas A&M’s Mitchell Center in College Station.
Leading the way were girls doubles teams from Alamo Heights and Boerne, who collected their second straight state championships.
Alamo Heights junior Fiona Crawley and sophomore Brianna Wilbur defeated Dallas Highland Park’s Annika Juergens and Lizann Boyer 7-5, 6-2 for the repeat. It was Crawley’s third straight doubles crown. She teamed with Brittney Wilbur, Brianna’s older sister and a sophomore at Wofford, to claim the top prize in 2017.
Boerne junior Georgia Rice and senior Catherine Coe topped Van’s Abby Jones and Faith Kirk 6-1, 6-0 to repeat as 4A doubles champions.
In 3A girls singles, Jourdanton senior Lea Karren rolled past Corpus Christi London’s Sara Humpal 6-1, 6-3 to complete a dominating run to become her school’s first state winner. Karren, an exchange student from France, dropped only five games in three matches and won three sets during the two-day event without losing a game.
Humpal, whom Karren also beat last month in the Region IV-3A final, was seeking a fourth straight state crown.
In 5A, Burbank’s Valerie Navarro-Cavazos finished second in singles, losing to Dallas Highland Park’s Bridget Stammal 6-2, 6-2. Navarro-Cavazos is the first Burbank player to earn a state medal and is believed to be the first from the San Antonio ISD to do so in 54 years.
In 4A boys singles, Boerne junior Ryan Koth’s bid for a third straight crown fell short as he lost to Dallas Uplift North Hills’ Siddhartha Mowa 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Reagan freshman Kyle Totorica fell to League City Clear Creek’s Carter Crookston 6-4, 6-2 in the 6A boys singles final.
In 3A mixed doubles, Ingram Moore’s Austin Fairchild and Caryle Pfiester lost to Rockdale’s Devon Whitsel and Reyna Gonzalez 6-3, 6-1 in the final.
