Fly to the tropics with Island 49 at Fox Park

La PORTE — Audience members are invited to float along with a fun, tropical flair at Fox Park on Thursday when Island 49 performs.

The regionally-based band plays Jimmy Buffett music as well as favorite party songs, with some tropical-rock originals and an eclectic mix of rock, blues and country. The band arranges popular cover songs “island style,” performing seasonally at festivals, private parties, community concerts, clubs, restaurants and bars throughout the year.

The group is fronted by guitarist and vocalist Doug Lins, with Karen Lins on vocals, percussion and baritone ukulele, Ron Rambo on Bass and Vocals and Stephanie Casaday on drums. For more information, check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Island49.

Also that evening, The National Anthem will be sung by Shania Povlock. Poetry reader is Mary Hedge, Community Services Librarian at La Porte County Public Library.

On Wednesday at Fox Park, the poetry reader is Mayme Stump, retired La Porte High School English teacher and member of the Ruth Coffeen Poetry Circle. Jimmy McCoy is the featured artist this week.

On Wednesday, the La Porte City Band concert will feature a flute solo by Elaine Hornyak during La Flute de Panby by Jules Mouquet; arranged by Johnston. Other concert highlights include The Picadore by John Philip Sousa; Sinatra, in Concert (arr. Jerry Nowak) and selections from “Les Miserables” by Claude-Michel Schoenberg. Plus the Indiana State Band March by O. A. Farnon.

Elaine Hornyak is a cum laude graduate of Indiana University with majors in flute and music education. She also studied at Cincinnati College – Conservatory of Music, University of Michigan and Western Michigan University. She plays piccolo with the La Porte City Band and is the principal flutist with the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, South Shore Orchestra, Windiana Concert Band, Elkhart Municipal Band and Michigan City Municipal band. She also plays piccolo with the Elkhart Symphony Orchestra and performs frequently as a soloist as well as teaching private lessons.
