Officials plan to install bridge fencing to prevent suicides

September 11, 2018

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut transportation officials will add fences to a bridge to prevent suicides.

The Hartford Courant reports Middleton Mayor Daniel Drew announced in a recent Facebook post that the state Department of Transportation will install 8-foot fences along the Arrigoni Bridge. DOT spokesman Kevin Nursick says the fences will help “as a deterrent for reckless, irresponsible thrill-seekers” and for people “considering harming themselves.”

The fences will be installed while DOT works on a bridge rehabilitation project next year. Work includes improvements to the approach decking, steel repairs and adding drainage.

According to Middletown police, officers responded to about 80 calls at the Arrigoni Bridge involving a suicidal person between 2008 and 2017.
