Powerful public employees union endorses New York Gov. Cuomo
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A powerful New York public employees union is endorsing Gov. Andrew Cuomo for a third term four years after the organization withheld its support during the Democrat’s second re-election campaign.
The Civil Service Employees Association announced Monday that it was backing Cuomo’s campaign because he has taken steps to boost unions in New York state.
CSEA President Danny Donohue says Cuomo has stood up to what the union chief calls “greedy corporate interests” out to destroy the nation’s labor unions.
The backing from the 300,000-member union is important for Cuomo, who’s being challenged in Democratic primary by the more liberal Cynthia Nixon.
During the 2014 gubernatorial election, CSEA chose not to endorse any candidate three years after Cuomo and the union fought over contract issues.
