Needles faces Silverado for Bronze Bracket championship
HENDERSON — Needles’ Lady ’Stangs varsity basketball team was set to face off against Silverado High School for the Bronze Bracket championship Saturday afternoon in the seventh annual Gator Winter Classic at Green Valley High School.
After suffering losses to Moapa Valley, 50-31; and Las Vegas’ Basic High School 68-41; the girls played a team from Chugiak, Alaska — a suburb of Anchorage — in the third round. Chugiak, previously mischaracterized as being from Canada, won 56-30.
“They’re one of the powerhouse teams of the whole tournament,” said Lady ’Stangs Coach Manuel Calderon. “They’re playing in the Gold Bracket with the elite.”
Needles girls remained in striking distance for three-fourths of the game, Calderon said. “Our energy level was real good. I thought we played really well with them.”
Riley Breaux led Needles’ scoring with 10. Paige Murch added 8, Valentina Limon six.
The Lady ’Stangs posted their first win of the tourney in the second Friday game; this one against Arbor View of Las Vegas. Down 23-17 at the half the girls battled back to lead 34-28 after three quarters, then take the win 43-38.
Valentina Limon scored a game-high 19; Murch added nine, Marie Mills eight, Jordyn Breaux five.
The girls had another tough battle, this one with Pahrump, Saturday morning. Down 13-4 after one quarter Needles rallied again to take an overtime win 40-39.
Mills scored 15, Murch 10, Valentina Limon eight and Jordyn Breaux seven in that contest.
