Peyton Manning? Tim Tebow? Who should replace Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football?

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- If the rumors turn out to be true, ESPN will be looking for someone to replace Jon Gruden on “Monday Night Football.”

The Oakland Raiders are in hot pursuit of their former coach (and Sandusky native) to take over for Jack Del Rio, who the team fired after finishing a disappointing 6-10.

“It’s simple, you don’t make that move with Jack Del Rio unless you know you can get Jon Gruden,” NFL insider Adam Schefter said on “SportsCenter” on Sunday. “Jon Gruden is going to be the next coach of the Oakland Raiders. The only question is when it happens.”

That means someone else will be alongside Sean McDonough in the MNF broadcast booth in 2018. Possible replacements for the QB whisperer affectionately known as “Chucky” are already being tossed around in the media. The names include recently fired coaches such as Chuck Pagano or Bruce Arians. Active players who may be considering retirement such as Jay Cutler, Joe Thomas, Eli Manning or Larry Fitzgerald could also be in the mix.

But two of the most intriguing names being bandied about are Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow. Manning, in particular, with his knowledge of the game and engaging personality that has made him an effective pitchman, seems like a no-brainer. Still, the future Hall of Famer has enjoyed being a soccer dad and so far resisted returning to the game he left two years ago.

Then there’s Tebow, whose cult of personality has made him the most popular minor league baseball player perhaps ever and who has already proven to be a solid analyst for ESPN. The questions surrounding Tebow are: would he be willing to give up his dream of playing baseball and, if so, is the college game a better fit for him?

Whether or not Manning or Tebow are even being considered, it’s fun to speculate. Tell us who would like to see on “Monday Night Football” next season in the poll and in the comments below.
