Suburban Chicago man charged in officer’s weekend shooting
ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. (AP) — A suburban Chicago man faces felony charges for allegedly shooting a police officer in the leg with the officer’s own gun last weekend as the two men struggled outside a home.
Alan D. Quintana-Cruz, 23, is charged with aggravated battery and disarming a police officer. Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Lee Filas said the Round Lake Beach man was ordered held on a $2 million bond during a Tuesday hearing.
Quintana-Cruz allegedly shot a Round Lake Beach police officer Sunday afternoon after the officer responded to reports of a domestic battery at a house and found two adult relatives fighting outside.
That officer then got into a physical altercation with Quintana-Cruz, who attempted to grab the officer’s holstered firearm, the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reported.
During that struggle, Quintana-Cruz allegedly fired the gun while it remained in its holster, hitting the officer in the lower leg. The officer was listed in stable condition following the shooting.
It was unclear Wednesday whether Quintana-Cruz has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
