Romanian Ambassador Killed In Traffic Accident
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) _ Romanian Ambassador Vasile Patilinet was killed Thursday in a head-on collision with a truck on the road from Ankara to Istanbul, the Hurriyet news agency reported.
The agency said Patilinet, 63, was driving his car to Istanbul where he was to leave it before returning home upon completion of his service in Turkey.
Hurriyet quoted Mircea Poliacov, the envoy’s chauffeur who was driving another car behind the diplomat, as saying he saw Patilinet’s car suddenly swerve from its lane.
The accident occurred near the village of Kizilcikorman in Akyazi township about 112 miles east of Istanbul.
An embassy spokesman in Ankara refused to discuss the accident and police officials in Adapazari could not be reached for comment.
