Tunisian security forces kill 2 Algerian Islamic extremists

January 21, 2018

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisian authorities say security forces have killed two Islamic militants in a remote western area of the country, near the border with Algeria.

The Ministry of the Interior says in a statement a special unit of the National Guard and soldiers circled an armed group of militants in the western region of Kasserine overnight Saturday.

The two people killed have been identified as Algerian militants linked to al-Qaida in the Islamic Magreb, or AQIM. One of them, Bilel Kobi, was considered a top aide of the leader of the organization.

Jihadis are known to use the mountainous border region as a base.

Tunisia was the target of deadly attacks by Islamic radicals that killed dozens of people at a beach resort and the country’s leading museum in 2015.
