Mets Activate Reed, Franco
NEW YORK (AP) _ New York Mets pitchers John Franco and Rick Reed were activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies.
Franco, out since July 3 with a torn tendon in his left middle finger, has 19 saves in 20 opportunities. He is 0-2 with a 3.45 ERA this season.
``John was very persuasive,″ Mets general manager Steve Phillips said. ``All the reports on both guys were good, and we thought it’d be better to activate John now, than to send him back to New Haven to pitch another inning.″
The left-hander threw 18 pitches in 1 1-3 scoreless innings for Double-A Binghamton on Friday in his only rehabilitation assignment.
``I felt good,″ Franco said of his minor league outing. ``I kept my pitches down, and I got groundball outs. I spent more time in the car than I did on the field.″
Reed is 10-4 with a 4.94 ERA in 21 starts, and has been out since straining his right middle finger on Aug. 8 against Los Angeles.
The right-hander allowed nine runs and ten hits in a three-inning rehab start for Triple-A Norfolk on Aug. 27. He is scheduled to start Tuesday night against San Francisco.
