August 20, 2018 GMT

The Beatrice girls softball team knocked off Class A No. 4 ranked Gretna 5-3 Saturday at Hannibal Park in Beatrice.

It was one of two games the Lady O played during the home triangular. They lost their opening game to Hastings 10-7.

In the upset over Gretna, Beatrice jumped on top early with two runs in the first inning.

Whitney Schwisow started the rally with a one out single and then scored on Addie Barnard’s RBI double to make it 1-0. Ashton Sandman then reached on an error, which moved Barnard to third base.

Hannah Lytle then reached on an error, which allowed Barnard to score, making it 2-0.

Gretna got one of those runs back with a solo home run in the top of the second. They then tied it in the third inning with another solo home run.

Beatrice would get the lead back in the bottom of the fourth. Reganne Henning led off with a single and moved to second on Lexi Schwartz’ sacrifice. She then scored on C Jurgena’s RBI double to make it 3-2.

Beatrice got another run in the bottom of the fifth. Schwisow and Barnard led off the inning with back-to-back walks. After Gretna recorded a double play, Schwisow would score from third when Lytle reached on an error, making it 4-2.

Gretna blasted another solo home run in the top of the sixth, making it 4-3, but that would be the last of their scoring.

Beatrice tacked on another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Rylee Pangborn led off with a walk and Emma Breland would come into run for her and advanced to second on M Mahoney’s sacrifice.

Breland would later score on Aden’s two out RBI single to make it 5-3.

Beatrice quickly recorded the first two outs of the seventh inning, but a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases. Barnard would strike out the next Gretna hitter, though, to end the game.

Bailey Green pitched four innings in the game, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out one and walking one. Barnard pitched three innings and gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out three and walking one.

Beatrice had six hits in the game, including a double and a single by Barnard and a double by Jurgena. Schwisow, Aden and Henning added a single each.

In the loss to Hastings, the two teams, Beatrice took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Hastings scored four runs in the fourth inning to lead 5-2.

Barnard’s two out grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth gave Beatrice a 6-5 lead, but Gretna scored five runs in the sixth inning to regain a 10-6 lead. Beatrice would get one run back in the seventh inning, but no more in the 10-7 loss.

Beatrice had 10 hits in the game. Lytle and Aden had a double and a single each while Pangborn and Leners had two singles each. Barnard had a grand slam home run while Sandman had a double.

Barnard, Green and Pangborn all combined to pitch in the game for Beatrice.

The Lady O is now 3-1 on the season. They played McCook and North Platte in a triangular on Monday. For those results, see Tuesday’s Daily Sun.
