Tucson podiatrist sentenced to prison for Medicare fraud
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — A 55-year-old Tucson podiatrist faces two years in prison and owes nearly $986,000 of restitution to the federal government for defrauding the Medicare program.
Loren Wessel was sentenced Friday in federal court after previously pleading guilty to health care fraud.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Wessel acknowledged that he submitted false claims to Medicare by billing for services more complex and expensive than the routine care that he actually provided for patients at assisted living facilities.
The office says Wessel falsified patients’ medical records to conduct and conceal the fraud.
