Lawyer, 2 ex-elected officials face Texas corruption probe

April 5, 2019

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — Federal prosecutors say two former elected officials in South Texas and a lawyer face bribery-related charges linked to contracts awarded for a $38 million public works project.

The men were arrested Friday in a case prosecutors say involves three engineering firms and Weslaco water treatment facilities.

Former Weslaco City Commissioner John Cuellar and his uncle, ex-Hidalgo County Commissioner Arturo Cuellar Jr. are charged with bribery conspiracy and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Attorney Daniel Garcia of Rio Grande City was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

A message left with Garcia’s law firm wasn’t immediately returned Friday.

An attorney for Arturo Cuellar Jr., Carlos A. Garcia, said he hadn’t seen the complaint but looked forward to presenting his client’s side of the story to a jury.

A lawyer for John Cueller didn’t immediately return a message Friday.
