Arnold C. Berens, 87, of Chebanse, passed away Monday (Oct. 22, 2018) at Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee.
He was born Dec. 26, 1930, in Chicago, the son of Ferdinand and Anna (Kampwirth) Berens. Arnold married Elvira Panozzo in November 1958 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Kankakee.
Arnold was the plant manager at Fibre Drum Company in Kankakee for 50 years but worked there even longer. He started working there in maintenance when he was in high school. Arnold also farmed 60 acres for many years as a hobby. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Arnold enjoyed socializing with anyone and everyone. He enjoyed walking his dog, Charlie, who was his constant companion for the last 10 years.
Arnold was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany on a construction crew.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Heidi Berens, of St. Anne; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Lori and Kevin Kennedy, of Joliet, and Lynn and Brian Ruhbeck, of Beecher; eight grandchildren, Sarah Kennedy, Jenna Kennedy, Andrew Berens, Samantha Berens, Nicole Moats, Allison Lindstrom, Heather Orlick and Maegan Orlick; four great-grandchildren, Savannah, Weston, Adaliene and Phoenix; one sister, Ann Ruder, of Herscher; and one brother, Joe Berens, of Piper City.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Leo Berens and Walt Berens; and one sister, Mary Settles.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Clancy-Gernon-Hertz Funeral Home in Kankakee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at St. John Paul II Catholic Church, West Campus, 953 S. Ninth Ave., Kankakee (formerly St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church). The Rev. John Horan will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Kankakee.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or for Masses.
