Volleyball: Phoenix open season by winning Monroe invite
MONROE — Carly Hirsch and Grace Kieselhorst led Luther Prep to a 4-0 record and first place as the Phoenix opened their volleyball season at the Monroe Invitational.
“We knew we had to come in strong today and then also finish strong and that is exactly what we did,” Luther Prep coach Erin Nottling said. “We saw four very different teams today and the girls adjusted quickly to what each team brought.”
Luther Prep took wins over the hosts (25-21, 25-21), Wisconsin Heights (23-25, 25-18, 16-14), New Glarus (25-5, 25-9) and Mount Horeb (27-26, 22-25, 15-6). Hirsch led the Phoenix in kills (31) and blocks (five) on the day while Kieselhorst posted team highs in assists (54) and aces (11).
Ally Goba collected a team-high 34 digs and served for eight aces while joining Hirsch and Kieselhorst on the all-tournament team. Andrea Bortulin had a productive day with 27 assists, 15 digs and eight aces.
“Grace and Andrea did a good job of finding the hitters at pivotal parts of the day,” Nottling said. “With Ally leading the back row, our offense was able to roll.”
Megan Riley (23 kills), Marisa Shevey (11) and Rhianna Hunter (11) also made big contributions to the attack. Hirsch added 15 digs and seven aces while Riley piled up 24 digs. Lake Mills hosts the Phoenix (4-0) in Thursday’s Capitol North opener.
