Victim dead in vehicle shooting
A man is dead following a shooting Monday afternoon.
At about 4:30 p.m., Fort Wayne police arrived at a hospital on a report of a man suffering an apparent gunshot wound. The victim, who was taken to the hospital by private vehicle, was pronounced dead a short time later.
Lafayette Street just south of downtown, between Buchanan and Butler streets, was closed to traffic about 5:30 p.m. as police located and collected shell casings from the road. Police believe that’s where the shooting took place and that the victim was inside a vehicle when he was shot.
Late Monday, investigators did not have a possible suspect. The identity of the victim, as well as the official cause and manner of death, will be released by the Allen County coroner’s office.
If ruled a homicide, the death will be Allen County’s 44th in 2018.
Another victim, who was shot early Monday morning in a separate incident, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Anyone who has information regarding either incident is encouraged to call the police department’s Detective Bureau at 260-427-1201 or Crime Stoppers at 260-436-STOP.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
