Injured Mako Vunipola in race to be fit for Rugby World Cup

May 17, 2019 GMT

LONDON (AP) — England prop Mako Vunipola is facing a race to be fit for the Rugby World Cup after being ruled out for at least three months because of a hamstring injury.

Vunipola’s club, Saracens, says the player needs surgery after getting injured in the team’s win over Leinster in the European Champions Cup final last weekend.

Saracens says it will take Vunipola “a minimum of three months to recover” from the operation.

The England squad is scheduled to depart for Japan on Sept. 8 — around 3 1/2 months away — for the start of the World Cup on Sept. 20.

Vunipola is a first-choice pick for England.
