High radiation levels detected in Hot Springs garbage truck

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Radiation that was detected in a Hot Springs garbage truck Tuesday morning was linked to medical waste, city and county emergency officials said.

The sanitation truck was headed to a landfill in Saline County when it was turned away because high levels of radiation were detected, Hot Springs police Cpl. Joey Williams said.

Multiple agencies responded, and the FBI eventually determined that medical waste inside the truck was the source of the radiation.

Williams told The Sentinel-Record that the truck’s driver was examined by medical personnel who determined that he was OK.

It’s not yet clear what exactly caused the radiation, but officials said the truck’s pickup route was in a residential area.
