Parents charged after girl tests positive for fentanyl
LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — Police have arrested a Massachusetts couple whose 1-year-old daughter tested positive for the powerful opioid fentanyl.
McDanner Pereyra and Jennifer Ouch, of Lawrence, appeared in court Tuesday on drug trafficking and weapons charges and were held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing. It’s not clear who their lawyers are.
Police responded to the hospital on Monday after the girl tested positive. Officers obtained a search warrant for her parents’ home and say they found drugs and ammunition.
Police say the mother at first said the girl had found a pill on the floor of a store and put it in her mouth. The girl’s 6-year-old brother told officers she actually picked up the pill at home.
Both children are in state custody. The girl is expected to be OK.
