Goad leads Miners past Pioneers

September 5, 2018 GMT

WAYNE — The deeper Wayne and Mingo Central went into Friday night’s contest, Miner quarterback Daylin Goad appeared to get stronger.

On Mingo Central’s final snap, the 6-foot-3 sophomore was stood up inside the 1-yard line on a run and calmly reached the ball across the goal line for the winning score as the Miners defeated the Pioneers, 29-24, in a classic at rainy Pioneer Field.

Wayne (0-2) jumped to a 16-6 halftime lead behind touchdown runs by Michael Bartram and Isaac Dean, the latter of which was a 67-yard sprint on third down-and-12.

But Mingo Central kept pounding the quarterback between the tackles, and finally broke through the Pioneer defense.

Goad had 31 yards on eight first half carries. He ran for 114 yards and three scores in the second half.

The Miners (1-1) totaled 413 yards of offense. Goad also threw for 172 yards and helped Mingo Central overcome five turnovers.

Mingo Central took its first lead of the second half on Goad’s 20-yard keeper up the middle, shrugging off multiple tackle attempts, making the score 22-16 with 3:15 to go.

Wayne answered. Gunner Harmon found Dean behind the defense on an out and up pattern, connecting on a 70-yard score just 29 seconds later to tie the score. Dean then found Tanner Owens on a double pass for the conversion, putting Wayne back on top, 24-22.

But Goad engineered a 70-yard march, running for 33 of it and including a 34 yard pass to Isa Scales that put the Miners at the 3-yard line, setting the game’s conclusion into motion.

Dean ran for 82 yards while Bartram added 78 in the loss.

Wayne will host Winfield after an open week.
