‘The Haves and the Have Nots’ star readies for more drama
Tyler Perry’s popular drama, “The Haves and the Have Nots,” returns for a new season at 9 p.m. Tuesday on OWN, and if the chaotic and emotional “First Look” video posted at Oprah.com is any indication, Candace Young and the crew are in for another heaping helping of turmoil and trouble.
“The Haves and the Have Nots,” starring Tika Sumpter as Young and John Schneider as Jim Cryer, follows the drama between the wealthy Cryer and Harrington families and the poor Young family.
As the new season begins, according to the network, Hanna’s (Crystal Fox) family is once again pushed to its limits after Warlock (Jon Chaffin) unleashes his vengeance.
According to OWN, last season’s finale scored 3.2 million viewers and a 2.58 rating among women age 25 to 54 in the network’s key demographics. The series ranked as Tuesday night’s No. 1 scripted cable telecast in total viewers, with a 15.61 rating among African-American women.
Sumpter, who revels in her role as the conniving Candace Young, has said that working with Oprah Winfrey and the Oprah Winfrey Network has had a major impact on her career and perspective.
“Man! I think between [Oprah] and Tyler Perry, I feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, because they’ve inspired me to, one — control what I want to do. Not live and die by somebody’s else’s yes or no,” Sumpter told The Philadelphia Tribune while promoting her 2016 feature film “Southside with You,” a project that she produced and is a co-star.
“Oprah going on her own and literally creating a network on her own, and then Tyler coming on board, I think with that alone they’ve given me the tools to be like, ‘You know what? You really can accomplish anything,’ “ the 36-year-old actress and New York native said.
“And too — seeking me out to be the lead on the show that is doing really well for them and that has such a loyal following, and I’m so grateful. All of that stuff helps your career,” Sumpter added.
