WESTCONN ROUNDUP Panek lifts Colonials to Little East crown
The WestConn women’s soccer continued its dominance over the Little East Conference Saturday, claiming a fourth straight conference championship in the title match. The Colonials defeated UMass-Boston 2-0 at home behind two goals from Kaleigh Panek.
It was a third title in three years for coach Alex Harrison, who will lead his Colonials into the Division III playoffs. Pairings for the tournament will be released Monday.
Bethel natives Lucy Daniels and Alexandra DeLuca provided assists for WestConn (14-8), which got off to a slow start to the season before winning 12 of their last 14 games.
The Colonials men’s soccer team booked its place in the LEC final after holding off top-seeded Eastern Connecticut 2-1 on the road Saturday morning. Two first-half goals from Darion Richeme was enough to continue WestConn’s run through the tournament.
The Colonials won their quarterfinal game 1-0 in overtime against Castleton as Chauncey Allers scored.
Eastern pulled a goal back in the final minute, but No. 4 WestConn held on to advance to Monday’s final. The Colonials will face No. 2 Keene State in the championship game back at Eastern Connecticut for the title.
