Butter It Up expands menu at new location at The Market
HUNTINGTON — First opening in Huntington at Heritage Station in 2014, Butter It Up started as a combination coffee shop and health food market. Initially catering to people with gluten-free diets, the restaurant has slowly expanded its menu while staying close to its roots.
Butter It Up recently moved to its new home at The Market in downtown Huntington with an expanded menu. The restaurant is known for its house blend coffee, which is produced locally by Ignition Roasters.
According to owner Andrew Hines the decision to move to The Market was “a no-brainer.”
“Heritage Station is a great place to open up a business, incubate a business and see if you have something,” he said. “We felt like we did, and we thought it was a no-brainer to move up here with the foot traffic from the Holiday Inn and the civic center,” Hines said. “The revitalization of this area is awesome, and we’re happy to be a part of it. Talks started about a year ago, and it took a while to get all of our ducks in a row. We started working on this space in October and we finally opened up in February.”
The shop had its first day Feb. 21, just ahead of a high-traffic weekend in downtown Huntington with a wrestling tournament in town.
“Having a big crowd showed us where we needed to step up and fix some things. It was a challenge. but I’d want it no other way,” Hines said.
While staying true to the eatery’s original focus, Hines said the shop has expanded on just about everything.
“We are still 100 percent gluten-free,” he said. “That’s hard for some people to believe after they try some of the stuff, particularly our sandwiches which are served on gluten-free bread. We are farm-to-table. We serve fresh meat and free-range chicken eggs. Obviously it’s kind of hard to get local produce during the winter, but as soon as spring comes we will see a lot more local produce from local farms.”
The coffee shop offers a variety of specialty drinks, including “The Drew” ($3.59) with cream and chocolate and “The Meagan” ($3.79) with cream maple and cocoa butter. Coldbrew Nitro Coffee also is available for $4.99. There are smoothies, including the Bodhi, ($2.49) a chocolate milk smoothie, and the “Hot Chocolate,” ($3.99) that has milk, cream, chocolate, maple and vanilla.
There are a number of breakfast items including Huevos Rancheros ($8.99), French Toast ($10.99), and the option to build your own breakfast sandwich starting at $3.49. There are also omelets such as The Popeye ($9.99) with bacon, tomatoes, cheese and spinach, and The Southwest ($10.99) with pork, black beans, nacho cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream and jalapenos.
For lunch you can grab a salad like the Sweet and Sassy Salad ($9.99) made with chicken, walnuts, cranberries and goat cheese served on mixed greens with a house dressing. Sandwiches include the Pork BBQ Grilled Cheese ($5.99), a BLT Sandwich ($5.79) or a house-made Chicken Salad Sandwich ($6.99). The restaurant offers burgers, including those made with grass-fed local beef ($8) or those looking for something more exotic can try elk ($11) or even camel ($11).
“We kept the basics from our old locations and expanded on it. We now have more sandwiches, salads and flatbreads. We also have daily specials which change each day,” Hines said. “We make our own butter each day. We now have nitro-brewed coffee and ... kombucha, which is a fermented tea drink. It has a small amount of alcohol in it, but you’d have to drink a keg of it to get drunk. We also have blondies and other gluten-free desserts.”
