Trooper shot near the Rio Grande
FRONTON — A trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety was shot in the leg about 1 p.m. Friday while patrolling an area near the Rio Grande in Starr County, according to Sgt. Johnny Hernandez.
The trooper was transported in a DPS helicopter to McAllen Medical Center where he is currently receiving emergency care for the non-life threatening injury, Hernandez said.
According to witnesses, there was a gun-battle on the Mexican side of the river involving the Mexican military when the trooper was struck by the bullet, Hernandez said.
Fronton is about three miles southwest of Roma and borders the Rio Grande.
